When it is worth doing ultrasound examination

Ultrasound is a non-invasive, painless and safe examination, so it is performed both for specific complaints and as a preventive measure. Below are situations in which it is worth scheduling an examination – if you recognize any of them in yourself, make an appointment.

Abdominal pain

Abdominal pain, feeling of fullness and bloating, nausea, digestive disorders, pain in the lumbar region, or abnormal blood test results are the most common reasons for performing an ultrasound of the abdominal cavity. The examination allows evaluating the liver, the gallbladder and biliary tract, the pancreas, the spleen, the kidneys, the urinary bladder, and the large vessels of the abdominal cavity. It is also the primary examination when suspected of biliary and renal stones.

Prevention and changes in the breasts

The ultrasound of the breasts is the primary imaging test for women under the age of sixty-six, in whom the dense structure of the gland limits the usefulness of mammography. It is worth scheduling the examination if you notice a palpable lump, a change in the shape of the breast, a discharge from the nipple, and also as a preventive measure – once a year, even if there are no symptoms. In women over 46, when a mammogram is recommended every two years, it complements the full diagnostic imaging, but should not replace it.

Problems with the thyroid gland

Enlargement of the neck circumference, a feeling of tightness, a palpable lump, as well as abnormal thyroid hormone levels are indications for an ultrasound of the thyroid gland. The examination allows us to assess the size of the gland and the presence of nodules and focal changes. We also perform it as a control for previously diagnosed changes and before a planned biopsy.

Joint pain, injury, overload

Pain, swelling, or limited mobility of the joint, sports injury, suspected ligament, tendon, or muscle damage – in these situations, ultrasound shows structures that are not visible on an X-ray image. We also perform the test as a follow-up to treatment and when planning infusion injections.

Symptoms from the blood vessels

Swelling and pain in the calves, visible varicose veins, a feeling of heaviness in the legs, intermittent claudication or dizziness are indications for a Doppler examination. It assesses the blood flow in the veins and arteries of the limbs and in the neck arteries, helping to detect varicosity, venous insufficiency and vessel narrowing.

Screening test for infants

The lumbar spine ultrasound is a screening test performed on infants, usually between the sixth and twelfth week of life. It allows for the early detection of hip dysplasia when treatment is the simplest and shortest. The test is painless and takes a few minutes.

Why it is worth doing USG in Kutna in the RCM

The examination is performed by a specialist doctor

The examination is performed by a specialist doctor in the respective field, not by a technician – the thyroid ultrasound is performed by an endocrinologist, the joint ultrasound by an orthopedist, and the testicular and prostate ultrasound by a urologist. Thanks to this, the image is immediately interpreted in the context of your symptoms and the entire clinical situation.

Result and discussion immediately

You will also receive a description of the test and its discussion during your visit. The doctor will explain what the image shows, what this result means, and whether further steps are needed – you don’t have to wait for a document or schedule a separate appointment to find out the result.

Wide range in one place

At our clinic, you will undergo an ultrasound of the abdominal cavity, breasts, thyroid gland, ovaries, lymph nodes and soft tissues, an ultrasound of the joints and hips, Doppler studies of the vessels, and an echocardiogram of the heart. If the test reveals anything that requires consultation, you can immediately make an appointment with a specialist.

Without referral

You do not need a referral for a private examination – you just need to choose the type of ultrasound and book an appointment online or by phone. If you are unsure which test is appropriate, please describe your situation over the phone and we will help you choose the scope of the examination.

What it involves ultrasound examination

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves that bounce off tissues and create an image of the inside of the body on the camera screen. It does not use ionizing radiation, so the test can be repeated many times and performed on children and pregnant women. It usually takes from a few dozen to thirty minutes, depending on the scope.

At the Różan Medical Center, ultrasound examinations are performed by specialists in their respective fields using a device that allows for the evaluation of both the abdominal organs and the small structures of the soft tissues or vascular flow. You can perform the examination either separately or in conjunction with a consultation – in that case, the doctor immediately compares the image with the patient’s symptoms and determines the next course of action.

USG of the abdominal cavity

USG of the abdominal cavity

The abdominal ultrasound is the most commonly performed ultrasound examination and usually the first step in the diagnosis of abdominal complaints. During the examination, the doctor assesses the liver, the gallbladder and the biliary tract, the pancreas, the spleen, the kidneys, the adrenal glands, the urinary bladder, and the abdominal aorta, and in men the prostate as well.

The test is performed on an empty stomach – for at least six hours before the visit, you should not eat, and two hours earlier, it is advisable to drink a glass of still water and not urinate to ensure that the bladder is filled. The test itself takes about twenty minutes, is painless, and does not require any recovery time.

When is it worth performing this test?
with abdominal pain, bloating and digestive disorders
on suspicion of biliary or renal calculi
with abnormal liver or kidney test results
as a control study of previously recognized changes
prophylactically, as part of a periodic health check

USG of the breast

USG of the breast

The ultrasound of the breasts allows the evaluation of the structure of the mammary gland, the lymph nodes of the axillary region, and the submammary area. In women before the age of forty, it is the primary imaging examination of the breasts, because the young gland has a denser structure and is less visible on mammography. In older patients, the examination complements mammography.

The test requires no preparation and takes about twenty minutes. It is best performed in the first half of the cycle, between the fifth and tenth day, when the breasts are less swollen. The ultrasound does not use radiation, so it can be repeated as often as desired, including during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

When is it worth performing this test?
with a palpable lump or thickening in the breast
with pain, swelling, or leakage from the gland
with familial breast cancer
as a control of previously recognized changes, for example, lumps
prophylactically, once a year, starting from the age of twenty

USG of the thyroid gland

USG of the thyroid gland

The ultrasound of the thyroid assesses the size and structure of the gland, the presence of nodules, cysts, and focal changes, as well as the surrounding neck lymph nodes. This is a basic imaging test in the diagnosis of thyroid diseases – both in the case of abnormal hormone levels and in the presence of palpable changes on the neck.

The examination does not require any preparation; it takes about fifteen minutes and is performed in a lying position with the head slightly tilted. It is advisable to remove the necklace and wear clothing that covers the neck. If necessary, we perform a fine-needle thyroid biopsy and an endocrinological consultation on-site.

When is it worth performing this test?
with an abnormal result of TSH, FT3 or FT4
with a palpable lump or an enlarged neck circumference
with symptoms of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism
as a control of Hashimoto disease and previously described nodules
before the planned fine needle biopsy

USG of the joints

USG of the joints

The ultrasound of the joints shows the soft tissues of the movement organ: tendons, ligaments, muscles, the synovial bag and the fluid in the joint cavity. It shows structures that are not visible on an X-ray image, which is why it is the first choice for injuries and overuse of the shoulder, knee, elbow, wrist, or foot.

A major advantage of ultrasound is the ability to perform dynamic examinations – the doctor views the joint in motion, which helps to detect structural conflict or instability. The examination does not require preparation and takes about twenty minutes. It can be combined with an orthopedic consultation, and, if indicated, with a bolus injection administered under ultrasound guidance.

When is it worth performing this test?
after an injury, sprain or strain
with pain and swelling in the joint that persist despite rest
with limited mobility and sports overuse
in case of suspected damage to a tendon or ligament
as a control of the healing process and the effectiveness of the treatment

USG of the hip joints in children

USG of the hip joints in children

The lumbar spine ultrasound is a screening test for infants, whose goal is the early detection of hip dysplasia. An abnormality that at this stage is not visible to the naked eye and does not cause symptoms can lead to permanent gait disorders in subsequent years.

The examination is usually performed in the first weeks of life, at the time indicated by the pediatrician or orthopedic surgeon, and if necessary, repeated for follow-up purposes. It takes a few minutes, is completely painless, and requires no preparation – it is only necessary to feed the child before the visit to keep them calm. Dysplasia that is diagnosed early is treated with conservative methods.

When is it worth performing this test?
as a routine screening test for infants
with an abnormal result of an orthopedic examination
with familial dysplasia of the hip joint
after a cesarean delivery or multiple pregnancy
as a control after an earlier study with a deviation

USG Doppler of vessels

USG Doppler of vessels

USG Doppler assesses not only the structure of the vessels but also the blood flow within them. We perform examinations of the veins and arteries of the lower and upper limbs as well as the carotid arteries – this allows us to detect thrombosis, venous insufficiency, atheroma, and narrowing that restrict blood flow.

The examination does not require any preparation and takes from twenty to thirty minutes, depending on the scope of the examination. The assessment of the lower limb vessels is usually performed in a lying and standing position, so it is advisable to wear comfortable clothing that is easy to put on and take off. The scope of the examination – one limb, both, one or two vascular systems – is determined at the time of booking.

When is it worth performing this test?
with swelling, pain and a feeling of heaviness in the legs
with varicose veins and visible changes on the skin of the ankles
on suspicion of deep vein thrombosis
for vertigo and the prevention of carotid artery atherosclerosis
as a control after a stroke or vascular intervention

ECHO of the heart

ECHO of the heart

ECHO heart, or echocardiography, is an ultrasound examination of the heart. It shows the structure of the chambers and valves, the thickness of the walls, the contractility of the heart muscle, and blood flow, and also allows the ejection fraction and the presence of fluid in the pericardial sac to be assessed. This is a basic imaging test in cardiology.

The examination is performed by a cardiologist in a supine position on the left side and takes about twenty minutes. It does not require any preparation or medication withdrawal. In the RCM ECHO procedure, the heart can be performed independently or as part of a consultation with a cardiologist – in which case the doctor immediately discusses the results and, if necessary, orders a Holter ECG or Holter blood pressure monitor.

When is it worth performing this test?
with shortness of breath, palpitations and decreased performance
with a murmur in the heart detected in a medical examination
with arterial hypertension and coronary artery disease
after a heart attack and with valvular defects
as a control of cardiological treatment

USG of the ovaries

USG of the ovaries

The ultrasound of the ovaries allows the evaluation of the structure of the ovaries, the fallopian tubes and the seminal vesicles, and the blood flow within them. It is the primary imaging examination in the diagnosis of pain and swelling of the ovaries, palpable changes, varicose veins of the seminal tract, and ovarian cyst.

The examination is performed by a urologist; it does not require any preparation and takes a few minutes. It is painless – discomfort may only occur with severe inflammation. We encourage you not to postpone the visit: a noticeable change in the core always requires a doctor’s evaluation, and early diagnosis is crucial here.

When is it worth performing this test?
with a palpable lump or thickening in the core
with pain, swelling or redness of the scrotum
after the injury the area around the crotch
in the event of suspected varicose veins of the seminal canal or hydronephrosis
in the diagnosis of male infertility

USG of the lymph nodes and soft tissues

USG of the lymph nodes and soft tissues

The examination includes evaluation of the lymph nodes in the neck, axillary and groin regions, and changes located in the soft tissues. The doctor examines the size, shape, structure, and vascularity of the changes, which allows him to preliminarily distinguish an inflammatory process from a change requiring further diagnosis.

Within the soft tissues, ultrasound imaging shows, among other things, fatty lumps, cysts, bruises, tumors, and abdominal wall hernias. The examination does not require preparation and takes about fifteen minutes. If the image indicates the need for a deeper diagnostic evaluation, the doctor directs the patient for a biopsy or a specialist consultation.

When is it worth performing this test?
with enlarged lymph nodes that persist for more than two weeks
with a palpable lump under the skin
when suspected of a hernia, abscess or hernia
after the injury, when suspected of a hematoma
as a control of a previously recognized change

Gynaecological ultrasound and during pregnancy

Gynaecological ultrasound and during pregnancy

Gynaecological ultrasound assesses the uterus, ovaries and endometrium, and the transvaginal head probe provides the most accurate image of the reproductive organ. In this area, we also perform monitoring of the menstrual cycle and ovulation, as well as evaluation of the fallopian tubes, which is used in the diagnosis of infertility.

Pregnancy examinations include obstetric ultrasound, which is performed by the gynecologist who provides gynecological and obstetric care; therefore, we schedule them together with the gynecological visit, and not as a separate imaging examination. We also offer prenatal diagnostics in the first, second, and third trimesters, including twins – these examinations are performed during a separate visit at specific weeks of pregnancy: 11.0–13.6, 18.0–22.0, and 28.0–32.0 hbd.

Results and next steps

Immediately after the examination, you receive a description along with an explanation. The doctor explains what is visible on the image and indicates the next steps – a follow-up check in a specified time, a specialist consultation, or additional tests that in most cases you will perform with us.

Most often Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions that patients most often ask before an ultrasound examination. In individual cases, the assessment by the doctor always determines the outcome.

Is a referral needed for an ultrasound?

No. We perform ultrasound examinations at the Rosał Medical Center on a private basis, so a referral is not necessary – you just need to choose the type of examination and book an appointment online or by phone. If you have the results of previous imaging tests, bring them with you: they make it easier to compare and assess changes over time.
